This article discusses the importance of searching and finding new methods of teaching and learning within dance. While Talking about the importance of providing a structure in teaching dance it also discusses that the kids in the class should be able to express their ideas. Dance is not easy to teach so, dance teachers must find themselves within the music and must try to experience dance as something new. Students are subject to thrive with their teachers while following a constructive class procedure. I like this article because the first thing it discusses is the importance of making art while also mentioning in the abstract that a class structure is vital. I will use this article to support my argument of the importance of having a class structure while teaching dance.

This article seems to focus on the big picture of a dance class. The author discusses the class structure, content, and the responses of the students. The author is looking to discover what methods work best in the dance classroom and which don’t succeed at all. The author gives personal experience as a dance teacher while also showing and analyzing journal entries. This article uses the term ‘integrated’ quite often, which also pertains to my topic of Artistry Dance Alliance creating a certain type of unity while also focusing on the individual dancer. The use of dance terms influences my decision to use this article as well.

Although this article does not relate directly to my question of ‘why is it important to have structure in a class room’ it does give me a definition of creative dance. This article also shows the relevance of dance and how it affects children in their preschool years. In my essay I will use this article to show how creative dance benefits children at the dance studio and relate it to class structure. I would first like to show that within my dance community, improvisation (creative dance) allows kids to experiment and find who they are and who they want to become with the assistance of an instructor and a class structure. I would also like to relate it back to class self confidence.

  1. Maraz, Aniko, et al. "Why do You Dance? Development of the Dance Motivation Inventory (DMI)." PloS One, vol. 10, no. 3, 2015, pp. e0122866, MEDLINE, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25803301, doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0122866.

This article discusses the use of dance in boosting self-esteem. As I am discussing children and the dance studio as a whole and the individual dancer, I believe confidence is a key part of being a successful dancer and dance teacher. This article is a study to explore the idea of what factor are put into play for motivation. Socialization is one of the factors that is a motivational factor. I would like to discuss the importance of socialization within Artistry. Logan discusses the emphasis she puts on the teacher to socialize and build relationships with the dancers and parents within the dance studio.

This article allows me to show the importance of children being involved in some kind of sport or activity. This article discusses the amount of children that are obese and how much of a problem obesity is becoming. The use of sports is essentially to entertain children while adding a basic structure to the activity allows children involved to learn. This article also educates me to show the various types of structure that succeeded and the ones that have failed. While this article also support the argument that being involved in any type of sports promotes independent problem solving that relates back to the improvisation game promoted at Artistry.

  1. Suzanne, Nichelle. "Class Planning Part Two: Focusing on Skills and Concepts in Lesson Plans.", 2009, http://www.danceadvantage.net/lesson-plans/.

As my text for project two is the notes that I use to teach in dance class, I thought I should mention the different methods used to create a lesson plan for the classes. This article is more of a blog but still gives useful information on how to make plans for teaching. Within my research paper I would like to widen my knowledge on taking notes and teaching dance. Integrating into a new studio is difficult and finding out what is expected of you is a tricky path to learn. This blog posts gives me certain tips and ideas on how to take and make better notes. Logan discusses how important class planning is to her and her studio. This article hits on key points of teaching dance as well as the methods that work best for her in her studio.

  1. Logan Tharpe. Personal interview. 5 July 2017

Logan Tharpe is the owner and director of Artistry Dance Alliance. Artistry is the community I am slowly integrating into and would like to become a part of in the fall. Logan Tharpe was able to give me personal information on her idea of how the studio should run. I was able to learn many aspects of the studio and see a whole new side. Logan told me the importance of a class structure and how the individual dancer is the focus of her studio. She strives for her studio to promote unity while also encouraging self-expression and individualism. Logan also discussed the time commitment I would have to be willing to make to the studio as well as to the dancers. Logan told me the various types of characteristics that she looks for in teachers who are wanting to become a member of the dance studio.
